In 2026 the question on most industrial sites is no longer "private 5G or Wi-Fi?". Wi-Fi is already there, and Wi-Fi 7 is becoming the default for new enterprise wireless. The real question is which work needs something more, and whether private 5G or 5G LAN is the right way to provide it.
Wi-Fi 7 is the starting point
Dell'Oro Group expects Wi-Fi 7 to have the steepest adoption curve of any enterprise WLAN generation, and IDC put it at 31.1% of enterprise access point revenue in the third quarter of 2025. Dell'Oro also notes that enterprises using private cellular keep deploying Wi-Fi. Private cellular adds to the wireless estate; it does not replace it.
Private cellular is still growing fast
ABI Research expects private cellular spending to grow from US$15.9 billion in 2026 to US$56.6 billion by 2031, with private 5G growing 36% a year. Energy, manufacturing and logistics account for 63% of 2026 spend. That is where the operational case is strongest.
What 5G LAN means
5G LAN is private 5G that behaves like part of your local network. It builds on 3GPP Release 16 "LAN-type services", which let devices on a private 5G network communicate as if they were on the same LAN. Vendors such as Celona use the term for private 5G that enterprise IT teams can run alongside Wi-Fi with familiar tools.
Four signs a workload needs private cellular
- It moves. Robots, vehicles and workers crossing large halls, yards or outdoor areas need seamless handover.
- It cannot stop. Control, safety and production systems need predictable performance on dedicated, licensed or shared spectrum.
- It is outdoors or in a hard environment. Ports, mines, energy sites and metal-heavy plants are where cellular coverage pays for itself.
- It needs strong identity. SIM-based authentication keeps operational devices separate from the office network.
Work that does not show these signs, such as laptops, meeting rooms and general IT, usually stays on Wi-Fi.
LTE, 5G and RedCap
Private 5G is not always the first step. ABI Research notes that many enterprises still get full value from private LTE. Dual-mode 4G/5G networks let you start with the devices you have, and new RedCap 5G devices are lowering the cost of moving to 5G.
Looking ahead
Wi-Fi 8 (IEEE 802.11bn) focuses on reliability rather than speed and is expected around 2028. It will narrow the gap for some workloads, which makes it more important to base a private cellular investment on use cases that clearly need it.
How we help
We identify which of your use cases need private cellular, choose between LTE, 5G and 5G LAN platforms, and build the business case. Wi-Fi stays in place for the rest. If you are planning a site network, talk to us.
